Roy Moore, the twice-removed Alabama Supreme Court chief justice currently running for US Senate, has again openly advocated for a Christian theocracy to rule over the United States, while insulting Islam — the world’s second-largest faith — as a “false religion.”

WBHM reports Moore was the featured guest at a Monday evening gathering of the North Jefferson County Republican Club at Jim ‘N Nick’s BBQ in Gardendale. The fundamentalist Christian told his audience that the United States is an immoral nation and that only a return to “God’s law” could save it. Ironically, attendees ate pulled pork sandwiches, which are forbidden in the Old Testament, during Moore’s speech.

When a Gardendale resident expressed fear that Islamic law would be implemented in Alabama, Moore, who has repeatedly warned against the mythical threat of Sharia law in the United States, responded by denying Islam is a religion.

“False religions like Islam, who teach that ‘you must worship this way,’ are completely opposite with what our First Amendment stands for,” he said just moments after asserting the nation must live under Judeo-Christian law.

Moore has previously sparked outrage by suggesting that the First Amendment only applies to Christians and by writing that Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN), the first Muslim elected to Congress, was not fit to serve because no Muslim could honestly take an oath of office.

“The Islamic faith rejects our God and believes that the state must mandate the worship of its own god, Allah,” Moore wrote, even though Judaism, Christianity and Islam are all Abrahamic religions that worship the same deity figure, as affirmed by leaders of all three faiths.

Moore — who was removed as chief justice in 2003 for refusing to remove a monument of the Ten Commandments from the state judicial building and again last year for defying federal orders to permit same-sex marriages — also railed against the US Supreme Court’s landmark 2015 Obergefell v Hodges marriage equality ruling.

“If they can do that, they can make legal [marriage for] a man and five women or a woman and five men,” Moore said, falsely adding that “there’s no historical context for two men to get married.”

Moore also waxed transphobic, asserting that “we do not need to think about transgender rights in the military… We’re talking about something that will actually decimate the morale in the military.”

A special election for the United States Senate seat vacated by Attorney General Jeff Sessions will be held on December 12, following an August 15 primary and September 25 runoff. In limited primary polling, Moore has held a substantial lead over Sen. Luther Strange (R-AL), appointed by disgraced former Gov. Robert Bentley (R) to fill the vacancy left by Sessions’ departure, and Rep. Mo Brooks (R-AL), who earlier this week raised eyebrows and ire by using a recording of the June 14 mass shooting at a congressional baseball practice in Virginia in a campaign advertisement. Alabamians haven’t elected a Democrat to statewide office in more than a decade, although Birmingham attorney Doug Jones has sparked widespread optimism among the state’s more progressive voters.
